FPSF Artists to Look Out For

Houston is getting hot and heavy – and we’re not just talking about the weather. What else is hot and heavy, you ask? Well … the music scene at the 2017 Free Press Summer Fest Lineup. The annual music festival will be pumping up the jams June 3-4th. Here are the artists to look for during the 2017 FPSF Houston!

Couple Classics

Flume

The Australian band with a heavy electronica influence is ready to drop the beat. With countless remixes and features with other leading artists, the ambient jams they produce are always inventive. Flume’s beat-driven music is sure to get some heads rockin’ and rollin’.

Lorde

This poetic singer, whose songs often tend to point out the obvious societal gap between luxury life of excess and vast poverty, is back on the radar with a new single. Green Light is all the rave, and Lorde never ceases to produce anything but an exceptionally unique live performance.

Forever Folksy

Milky Chance

The German folk pop band’s new album Blossom is circulating throughout the globe. A little more pop and beat influenced than their first album, Sandnecessary, Blossom features instrumentals, layered harmonies, and Spanish guitars, amid an electronica atmosphere. This niche and elaborate combination of influences are sure to make a live performance worthwhile.

Portugal. the Man

The indie pop band derived from the Alaskan wilderness knows how to rock. Indie and alternative, Portugual. the Man seems to produce a sound that feels appropriate for the beach, campfire or, of course, a music festival. The mustachioed lead singer, John Gourley, has bright vocals that will linger in the depths of your music-loving head long after the performance.

Newer Noise

The Wheel Workers

This local band from our very own Houston, Texas, comes with a sturdy and sound lyrical base. Steven Higginbotham has strong vocals that are just as powerful as the political relevancies his lyrics highlight. Heavy on both rock and meaningful topics, the Wheel Workers are sure to make an impactful appearance at 2017 FPSF.

Stick Figure

American reggae is the genre. The Southern California band creates a marriage between reggae and electronica sound, giving them a distinctive niche. The new American reggae sound has dub beats, heavy instrumentals, and great vibes. Get ready to chill out and kick it with Stick Figure.

Well read: books we’re enjoying

Books can add so much good to your life – they can inspire, offer escape, bring clarity and ease stress. So, grab a cozy blanket and a cup of tea (or coffee if you’re like Jenn), because we are sharing our favorite reads (as of late).

The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie KondoJulia: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo
“If you’re like me and love to be organized, but organization doesn’t come naturally to you… you need this book. Marie Kondo is an adorable person who truly has a passion and love for tidying up. Her enthusiasm is contagious and, if you follow her method, it’ll change your life.”

The Defining Decade

Anna: The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter–And How to Make the Most of Them Now by Meg Jay, PhD
“If you’re in your 20’s, this book is a must. Spending the past few years in marketing, I’ve heard the term “Millennials” used as a noun, adjective, stereotype and excuse. This book puts all the labels aside and challenges you to evaluate YOUR life – not anyone else’s. Your twenties are a time to make mistakes, learn what works and grow, so don’t waste them inside your comfort zone playing it safe.”

The Creation of ANne BoleynSarah: The Creation of Anne Boleyn by Susan Bordo
“I was raised with the stories about King Henry VIII and his wives and was always fascinated by the Tudor family. Anne Boleyn has such a tumultuous history that is shrouded in a lot of rumor and propaganda. This book helped me look at Anne Boleyn in a different way and realize how the “tale of Anne Boleyn” has been twisted and turned to meet the culture of the time. Fun fact: she did not have a 6th finger!”

whered-you-go-bernadetteRachel: Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple
Where’d You Go, Bernadette is a captivating story about Bernadette Fox, a design maven, wife and mom who leads a normal life and suddenly goes missing. I love how each section is written from a different character’s point of view – eventually all of the conversations sync up to uncover where/why Bernadette vanished!“

Brené Brown Rising Strong

Jenn: Rising Strong by Brené Brown
“To vulnerably own your story and write the ending how you choose…it’s inspiring, empowering and incredibly freeing. I find myself living a little stronger, a little braver and a little more courageous.

Imagine Heaven

Dawn: Imagine Heaven by John Burke
“It’s written by a local pastor who studied accounts of people who have had near-death experiences (NDEs). An inspirational journey through the Bible’s picture of heaven, colored with real-life stories of heaven’s wonders, I have a clearer understanding of life after death.“

The 5000 year leapMichael: The 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen
“This should be mandatory reading for every American. The book describes the 28 Principles of Freedom our Founding Fathers said, “must be understood and perpetuated by every people who desire peace, prosperity, and freedom,” and how adherence to these beliefs during the past 200 years has brought about more progress than was made in the previous 5,000 years.”

Case Study: Maguey Sap Recipe Development

Have you ever tried to launch an unfamiliar product with a funny name in an overcrowded market? We have. And it worked fabulously. Here’s just a flavor of our needle moving strategy.

Meet Maguey Sap (pronounced Mah-Gey), a staple and household name in Mexico. A healthier alternative sweetener, it’s delicious, natural, fresh and packed with prebiotic fiber, antioxidants and amino acids. The team behind Maguey Sap, Villa de Patos, came to Wellington Group Marketing & PR to introduce this sweet and sappy product to the US.

Part of our robust marketing and PR plan includes developing approachable and appetizing recipes to showcase the versatility, flavor profile and deliciousness of Maguey Sap.

We research, create, develop, test, perfect and photograph recipes. We’re able to use these recipes to send product, food samples and recipe cards to the media and grocery store distributors, use them at demos in grocery stores and national tradeshows and share them with people like you.

If the recipes aren’t enough to have you running to your nearest Whole Foods or Central Market, learn a little more about Villa de Patos and Maguey Sap here. Even better, here’s a coupon. You won’t be disappointed. Happy Eating!

This is just one strategy we put into action for our clients. Interested in learning what else we did and how we can help you?

Let’s schedule a time to talk.

How to Enhance Creativity

Working in a creative industry means that our right brains are put into over-drive at times. Creativity can be a tricky thing, coming in random bursts and sometimes at inconvenient times. However, there are ways to fully utilize those moments and create an environment for even more of them to occur. Check out some of the tips we use around the office to enhance and capture our creativity.

 Slow Down
This tip can be tricky because let’s face it, we live in a fast-paced world that is always pushing us to go, go, go. But, when you’re thinking about your next task, before you’ve even completed the one you’re current working on, your mind doesn’t have time to get those creative juices flowing. Try taking a step back. Allow yourself to relax and process the world around you. This will tidy up your mind and leave room for those creative ideas to start flowing in.

Take Notes
It is no secret that moments of creativity come when we least expect them (in the shower, during our workouts, while we are cooking dinner, etc.), so make sure you always keep a pen and paper handy. Writing down your creative thoughts and ideas in the moment will make sure you remember them later. If you don’t have paper around, you can always use the notes feature on your phone.

Surround Yourself with Inspirational Opportunities
The environments that best produce creativity vary from person to person, so it is important to try out new things until you find what works for you. Some things that work for us here in the office are spending time outside, working with our hands (e.g. playing with silly putty or play-doh during brainstorms), exercising and listening to music.

Journal
Although we think carrying around a pocket-sized journal is great way to capture random thoughts of inspiration, taking the time to journal and write things by hand is a great way to reflect and produce even more new ideas. Challenge yourself to journal consistently for one month and see how your productivity improves.

Adopt a “Yes, and…” Attitude
This mindset is big here in our office. Negativity can kill creative ideas, so we always try to follow up new ideas and comments by saying “Yes, and…”. This helps us expand the creativity that is already present and leads to even more original and exciting ideas.

Those are some of our tips for fostering creativity in our office. What methods work for you? Let us know in the comments.

Tips For Maintaining a Work-Life Balance

Here at Wellington Group Marketing & PR, we work hard so that when the workday is done we are able to return home to exercise, play with the kiddos, cook yummy meals and maybe even binge-watch our favorite shows on Netflix. Our awesome Boss Lady, Dawn, left the corporate life to create an environment for an open-minded team to laugh loudly, speak openly and embrace their weird and wacky ways while still having time to enjoy their life outside of work. So how do the ladies of Wellington Group Marketing & PR maintain a work-life balance? Here are our tips:

  1. To-do Lists – We can’t stress enough how beneficial it is to write a to-do list for each day, week and maybe even month. It has been proven that people who write their goals down on paper have a better chance of achieving them. Yep, it’s time to close the notes tab on your smart phone and pull out the old notebook. We each write lists for work and for our personal lives, and it has changed our lives for the better!

  1. Be Realistic– Don’t put too much on your plate if you know you can’t do it. Allocate a manageable amount of tasks to complete so you feel accomplished at the end of the day and not overwhelmed. This way you can have some free time for yourself.

  1. Make a Schedule – Schedule your tasks ahead of time so that you give each item on your to-do list the attention it deserves. Make sure you schedule a specific time for yourself to relax, exercise or do chores in addition to your work tasks. Both are equally important!

  1. Prioritize – Put the “must do’s” at the top of the to-do list and get them done first. If hanging out with friends is considered a “must do” put it at the top of your list! NYC PR Girls has a great idea with their Life Balance Pyramid. Check it out and make your own pyramid to focus on where your priorities are.

Our March Playlist

With warmer weather on the horizon we are itching to move our workout outdoors! With songs by Beastie Boys, Saul Williams and Fleetwood Mac, our March playlist is guaranteed to get you movin’. Give it a listen on Spotify:

Hum Nutrition Keeps You Humming Along

We’ll admit it — we’re up for anything that’s aligned with living a healthy lifestyle.  From cold-pressed juices or the latest and greatest workout to a new running shoe – we’ll try most anything. But even we’ll confess, we were a bit skeptical about taking a new vitamin supplement. Hum Nutrition, however, got us humming a new tune.

Vitamins have always been a little ho hum if you ask us and, sure…we’ll say it — cookie cutter. There’s no personalization until now. What we liked about Hum Nutrition right out of the gate was the simple test you take that focuses on your lifestyle habits – what and how much you eat and drink, your level of activity, age, and even down to the amount of sunshine you soak in. Your test results are sent to a nutritionist who analyzes them and makes personalized recommendations from their stellar lineup of vitamins. Emily, our PR & Marketing Ninja, and her husband decided to give Hum Nutrition a try, and they have really been impressed with their products.

The nutritionists at Hum recommended OMG! Omega the Great; Here Comes the Sun (yes, we need more vitamin D, even here in Texas) and Arctic Repair for the couple. But it’s not just about the vitamins that are recommended for you, it’s their other offerings that are enticing too. For instance, you don’t have to have their über famous Red Carpet vitamin pack that gives you glowy skin and shiny hair. But hey, who doesn’t want that? Or, you can try their Skinny Bird that includes 7-Keto to increase fat burn and green tea to boost metabolism. We just finished the holidays and might have had an extra slice of cheesecake!

What we love about Hum Nutrition is their dedication to the cause. As you know, we here at Wellington Group Marketing & PR love supporting entrepreneurs. The two Hum founders uprooted their families from London and moved to the U.S. to pursue this supplement dream of theirs — and achieve it they have! Plus, their products are gluten free, non-GMO and are sustainably sourced to boot.  And did we mention their fabulous line-up of nutritionists? What’s not to love?!

You might be thinking, “Yeah, but where’s the proof?” Emily passed on the Detox Cleanse to her sister who was feeling a bit sluggish after the holidays and a week later received this text: “I just wanted to tell you thank you for all of the vitamin stuff you gave me. My skin has cleared up, and I just feel a whole lot better!”

We look forward to seeing Hum Nutrition hum along for years to come!
